Plain VS. Glorified
For this assignment, we had to take something simple and then glorify it. We were assigned to make a cupcake stand out of nothing but recycled materials. We then had to choose a theme that went along with Earth Day. Our group decided to go with the issue of deforestation, or "Save the Trees". We began our process by deciding what we wanted to build. After settling on a tree itself, we used different sizes of cardboard tubes to make the trunk and branches. We used cardboard discs to create our three tiers as well. To give our stand strength, we paper-mached the entire structure. After the paper-mache had dried, we spray painted the "tree" and then covered our tiers in "grass". Finally, to finish off we also put the "grass" in the ends of the tubes and hung a "Hug Me" sign around the tree to make sure our issue we had selected was easily understood..
When it came to the cupcakes, we kept some simple, but others were a little more complex. The ones placed at the very bottom were green with laffy-taffy flowers. There was one styled to look like a bird's nest, and another to look like a garden gnome. The rest were simply green and blue with different designs on them. Some said things about recycling, and others held peace signs. The following are the before and after pictures of the cupcakes, and the gallery is of the process of building our stand.
